Why and how to apply for a NIE number?

If you want to buy a house, buy a car or subscribe to a phone contract in Spain, a NIE number is necessary. Without this number, you simply can't do anything! Applying for a NIE number seems difficult, but it is not that bad.
A NIE number can be applied for in several ways, and you only need to apply for it once. Once you have the NIE number it will remain your personal identification in Spain.
WHAT EXACTLY IS THE NIE NUMBER?
An NIE number is a unique tax number for foreigners. The abbreviation stands for "Número de Identificación de Extranjeros" and both residents and non-residents are required to have it.
WHY DO I NEED A SPANISH NIE NUMBER?
You need an NIE number for the following:
- Purchase of a property
- Purchase of a car
- Renting a house (long-term)
- To work in Spain
- Take out an insurance policy
- Opening a bank account (in most cases)

If you want to stay in Spain for more than 3 months, you will also need a NIE number. This serves as proof that you are legally residing in Spain.
WHO NEEDS A NIE NUMBER?
Anyone staying in Spain for any of the following reasons:
- Work and live in Spain
- Internship in Spain
- Setting up a company
- A long stay in Spain (more than 90 days)
You do not have to apply for a NIE number if Spain is only your holiday destination.
HOW TO APPLY FOR A NIE NUMBER?
You can apply for a NIE number in various ways.
- At the Spanish embassy in your home country.
You need to make an appointment at your country's Spanish embassy online or by phone. - By appointment at an Oficina de Extranjeros in Spain

You should also bring the documents below.- the completed EX-15 document, in triplicate
- the completed MODELO 790 CODIGO 012 form, and proof of payment
- a copy of your identity document
- 2 passport photos in colour
- With a power of attorney at a lawyer or gestor.
You can also provide a power of attorney to a lawyer or gestor, who can apply for a NIE number for you. The cost for this is a little higher, but you will not have to worry about it at all and will receive your NIE number digitally via mail.
If you know that a NIE number is needed then it is best to start the application well in advance. It takes 6 to 8 weeks before you receive the NIE number.
